15. Exploring racial division in American churches

- Do you regularly attend church services? If so, how would you describe the demographic makeup of the congregation? Is your church racially and ethnically diverse?
- How has your church historically included or excluded different racial, cultural, and ethnic groups, and how does this continue to play out today?
- Are there efforts being made by your church to promote diversity and racial/social justice? If so, how effective do you believe these efforts are? If not, what do you think needs to change?
- After reviewing the materials, would you consider attending a service held at a Black church in your community? Why or why not? What might attending such a service help you understand about racial division in American churches?
This module provides a powerful opportunity to reflect on the role of racial segregation in religious spaces. By examining the church’s role in both reinforcing and challenging racial division, you are invited to consider the historical and contemporary significance of racial justice within religious contexts. This reflection will help you critically assess your own relationship with faith-based institutions and the actions you can take to advocate for racial equity within your community.
