16. Reflecting on racial justice gaps.

Racial justice goes beyond understanding; it requires a personal commitment to closing the gaps between knowledge, desire, and action. Reflecting on how these gaps show up in our lives helps us take meaningful steps toward a more just society. This module encourages you to explore your own relationship to racial justice by examining these gaps and identifying ways to bridge them.

ACTION: Please reflect upon and answer the following questions:

What are your thoughts and feelings after reviewing the video?

  1. Take a moment to reflect on the content. Did anything surprise you? Challenge your views? Stir emotional responses? Write down what stands out to you most and why.

What did you learn about yourself?

  1. Reflect on any new insights you gained while engaging with the material.

Explore how knowledge, desirability, and action gaps show up in your life when it comes to racial justice.

  1. Do you understand the historical and systemic factors that contribute to racial injustice? Are there things you do not know but would like to learn? What gaps exist in your understanding of racial justice issues?
  2. Reflect on your motivation to advocate for racial justice? Do you feel passionate about the issue or are there personal or societal pressures that discourage you from taking action?
  3. What steps can you commit to address the problem? Consider how you can take more proactive steps in addressing racial inequities (e.g., speaking out against injustice, supporting policies or organizations that address racial disparities, etc.).

How do you see your role in addressing these gaps, and what action can you take to close them?

  1. After identifying gaps in knowledge, desire, and action, think about how you can actively engage in addressing these gaps. What are small or large actions you can take to increase your understanding of racial injustice, motivate others, or actively fight against racial disparities? Consider concrete steps like engaging in further education, speaking out, advocating for policy change, or supporting organizations doing racial justice work.

As you reflect on your responses to the questions above, consider how systemic racial injustice is maintained by individual gaps in knowledge, motivation, and action. Thinking about your role in racial justice work is a crucial step in becoming more involved in challenging racial inequality. By identifying where these gaps exist in your own life, you can take purposeful actions toward greater understanding and advocacy for racial justice.
