20. Understanding intersectionality and the fight for justice.

This module focuses on understanding intersectionality and its critical role in the fight for justice. Intersectionality helps us understand how different aspects of identity — such as race, gender, class, sexuality, and ability — intersect and create unique experiences of oppression or privilege. By exploring the work of Kimberlé Crenshaw and others, you will gain insight into how these overlapping identities shape individuals’ lives and their struggles for justice. The module encourages reflection on how social movements can be more inclusive and responsive to these interconnected experiences of marginalization.

ACTION: Please continue to reflect on your vulnerability and answer the following questions:
  1. What are your thoughts and feelings after reviewing the materials? What surprised you or stood out to you in your readings and viewings?
  2. What intersections do you stand between (e.g., race, gender, class, ability)? How do these intersecting identities influence your lived experience?
  3. How have the different identities you hold shaped your personal experiences and your perception of the world around you?
  4. Kimberlé Crenshaw says, “The failure of feminism to interrogate race means that the resistance strategies of feminism will often replicate and reinforce the subordination of people of color, and the failure of antiracism to interrogate patriarchy means that antiracism will frequently reproduce the subordination of women.” How do we interrogate systems of oppression within movements to ensure they are inclusive and representative of different experiences?
  5. Explore the #SayHerName campaign. What other movements or initiatives address intersectionality? How can you support their efforts and contribute to their work?

This module encourages reflection on how different aspects of our identity intersect and shape our experiences with privilege and oppression. The materials highlight the importance of social movements actively addressing multiple forms of oppression in order to be inclusive and effective. As you reflect, think about how you can contribute to efforts that promote justice and equity, particularly for those at the intersections of marginalization.
