21. From allyship to action.

This module challenges you to reflect on the difference between performative allyship and genuine action. Through a closer look at allyship, we explore the need for deeper, more sustained efforts to address racial and social injustices. The materials in this module emphasize the importance of moving from words to meaningful actions that contribute to real change.
- What are your thoughts and feelings after reviewing the materials? What surprised you, and what did you learn?
- Holiday Phillips defines “performative allyship” as “when someone from [a] nonmarginalized group professes support and solidarity with a marginalized group in a way that either isn’t helpful or that actively harms that group.” Reflect on how you distinguish between performative allyship and authentic support. What actions can you take to ensure your allyship is genuine?
- Consider keeping a daily log of the instances you observe performative allyship. How does it manifest in your environment, and how can you challenge or disrupt these behaviors when you see them?
- Many organizations, both public and private, make statements in support of racial justice but often fall short of implementing real change. Reflect on the organizations you are involved with—how are they aligning their actions with their public commitments to racial justice? What specific steps are they taking to ensure meaningful change rather than merely offering symbolic support?
- Given the current discourse—or lack thereof—on reparations, affirmative action, and policies addressing racial disparities, how can you contribute to these conversations in your workplace, community, or through activism? In what ways can you support initiatives that advocate for long-term, sustainable policy changes, ensuring that historically excluded communities have a central role in shaping these solutions?
True allyship goes beyond words—it is about consistent, intentional actions that drive real, systemic change in support of historically excluded communities. As you reflect on this module, remember that allyship is not a one-time gesture but a lifelong commitment to challenging injustice and creating space for equity. By moving from performative actions to meaningful, sustained involvement, you become an active participant in dismantling oppression and fostering a more inclusive society. Your efforts matter, and the choices you make can contribute to a future where true justice and equity prevail.
Thank you for participating in CARE. Your individual action creates ripples of impact, and our collective momentum will drive meaningful change. Together, we can build a more inclusive future. Please donate today to help ensure that future for all.
