ACTION: As you reflect on the following questions, try to be as open and reflective as possible, understanding how your media consumption shapes your perceptions of race and representation. Consider the following questions to guide your reflection:
  1. What were your initial thoughts and feelings after reviewing the materials? Did anything surprise you, or challenge your thinking? What new insights have you gained about media representation?
  2. Reflect on the media you consume regularly. What is the racial diversity of the main characters in your favorite TV shows and movies? Are certain racial groups overrepresented or underrepresented?
  3. How are people of color represented in the shows, movies, and media you watch? Are the portrayals nuanced and diverse, or do they lean toward stereotypes and one-dimensional characterizations?
  4. Examine how people of color are represented in the print media you consume, such as newspapers and magazines. What types of stories are being told about people of color? Who or what is depicted on the front pages and magazine covers you view?
  5. Consider the advertisements you see alongside your media consumption. How are people of color represented in the advertisements? Are they portrayed positively and authentically, or are there patterns of stereotyping and marginalization?
  6. Think about the young people in your life and the media they consume. How are racial experiences and identities represented in the TV shows, movies, and advertisements they are exposed to? What impact might these portrayals have on their understanding of race and identity?

This module invites you to reflect on the influence that media representations have on shaping our perceptions of race, identity, and societal norms. As you critically examine the media you consume, consider the ways in which these portrayals either reinforce or challenge stereotypes and biases. The next step is to not only recognize these issues but to also engage in media literacy practices that promote equity and challenge harmful portrayals. Through this ongoing reflection, you can contribute to creating a more inclusive media landscape that reflects the richness and diversity of all racial identities.
