ACTION: As you continue this journey of understanding and reflection, consider the following questions to deepen your engagement with the topic of cultural appropriation and appreciation:
  1. What were your initial thoughts and feelings after reviewing the materials? What surprised you, and what new perspectives did you gain on cultural appropriation versus cultural appreciation?
  2. Cultural appropriation can reinforce harmful stereotypes and perpetuate misunderstandings. Reflect on your own experiences—how have you seen or witnessed cultural appropriation in your life or in your community? What steps can you take to ensure you are appreciating cultures, rather than appropriating them?
  3. Consider the cultures and identities that are part of your life. How do you engage with these cultures? What are some ways you can deepen your understanding and respect for them, ensuring your actions align with cultural appreciation rather than appropriation?
  4. Reflect on the question: “What would America be like if we loved Black people as much as we love Black culture?” What does this statement reveal about the disconnect between cultural celebration and the recognition of people’s humanity? How can we move toward a more equitable relationship with culture, particularly in how we view Black culture?
  5. What changes can you make in your daily life to better understand and engage with cultures in a respectful, appreciative way? How can you challenge others when you see cultural appropriation occurring?

This module offers an opportunity to reflect on the fine line between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation, a key issue in understanding and addressing systemic racism. The materials have outlined the complexities of how culture is shared, celebrated, and sometimes misused. By reflecting on your own interactions with different cultures, you can begin to challenge harmful stereotypes and support the respectful appreciation of cultural diversity. Cultural appreciation requires awareness, respect, and an ongoing commitment to learning and growing. As you move forward, consider how your actions can contribute to fostering a culture of respect and equity for all people, and how you can be a part of shifting societal norms toward greater cultural understanding.
