ACTION: As you reflect on the readings and videos in this module, consider the following questions:

Had you previously heard of the cradle-to-prison pipeline?

  1. If so, what was your understanding of it? Did the materials change or expand your perspective on the issue? How?

Research has shown that Black students are more likely to be suspended than their white peers for the same behaviors.

  1. Review the data in Suspended Progress, specifically relevant to your school district in Virginia. How did you perceive school discipline before reading the materials? Has your understanding of the issue shifted after engaging with the content?

Studies indicate that police presence in schools contributes to the preschool-to-prison pipeline.

  1. In schools with police officers, school administrators are more likely to refer disciplinary issues to law enforcement. What is your school district’s policy on law enforcement presence in schools?
  2. Do you believe SROs help or harm the school environment? What are potential alternatives?

By reflecting on these questions, consider how the school policies and practices described in the materials impact not only the youth in your community but also their future opportunities. What actions can you take within your sphere of influence to challenge practices that contribute to the cradle-to-prison pipeline? Whether through advocating for more equitable school policies, engaging with local school boards, or raising awareness, your commitment to breaking down systemic barriers can help create a more just and supportive environment for all students.
