CYFA launched its Relax Relate Restore series in January 2021 to provide a restorative, conversational space to process lived experiences related to current global, national, and local affairs. Relax Relate Restore events are held on the second Wednesday of each month.
CYFA developed its Relax Relate Restore series to allow participants to relax in an intimate virtual setting, relate with others through free expression, and restore well-being and healing through facilitated, reflective conversations. The discussions are led by Gregory Baldwin, CYFA’s Director of Restorative Practices.
Mr. Baldwin is renown for his experience and commitment not only to restorative justice but also its intersections with spirituality, indigeneity, racial justice, and peace-building. Mr. Baldwin is regularly consulted on sensitive matters involving racial harm and injustice. Recently, in 2020, Mr. Baldwin co-facilitated a restorative conference to address an offensive senior banner that organized young children of color as the outline to the school’s initial and the school district’s harmful initial response to public outcry. Mr. Baldwin worked to create a safe space for the school community to express feelings, concerns, and needs and to create a plan for repairing the harms. The school’s principal described the process as “a powerful experience” and one that promoted opportunities for “constructive ideas.”
Mr. Baldwin honors and appreciates the indigenous roots of restorative practice and recognizes its transformational power to build community around diversity, equity, and inclusion. He brings this commitment to the Relax Relate Restore series to create space for powerful relational experiences that support the cultivation of new, constructive ideas to address the events around us.
Relax Relate Restore utilizes restorative conferencing to build community and provide space to speak truth. The process involves mindfulness, honoring the culture and roots of the practice, agreement to circle tenets, and facilitated discussion through use of a talking piece or speaking order (i.e., virtual processes).
Participants are not required to study in advance of a Relax Relate Restore event; instead, each participant brings his or her authentic self. The goal is to build and strengthen relationships and community bonds through courageous conversations that promote understanding. The Relax Relate Restore discussions do not allow for debate and are not aimed to convince others of any particular view; rather, each participant openly and actively shares, listens, and learns. Through these critical equity-based conversations, participants have an opportunity to be curious and to heal in relation to one another.
