- What are your thoughts and feelings after reviewing the materials? What surprised you? What did you learn?
- Holiday Phillips defines “performative allyship” as “when someone from [a] nonmarginalized group professes support and solidarity with a marginalized group in a way that either isn’t helpful or that actively harms that group.” Reflect upon performative allyshipfrom authentic and genuine intentions that will lead to actual change. Keep a daily log of how performative allyship exists around you. As you go about your day, consider how you can disrupt or challenge performative allyship. Phillips gives examples in her article.
- Many public and private organizations have made public statements in support of racial and social justice; however, they have not changed the culture of the organization to align with their public statements. What public or private organizations do you support? What racial and social justice actions are being taken by the organizations you have identified?
- Black people in the United States account for 15 percent of the population. The Fifteen Percent Pledge is calling on “major retailers to commit a minimum of 15% of their shelf to Black-owned businesses.” Explore who has taken the Pledge. Consider directing at least 15% of your monthly budget across categories to Black-owned businesses.
