Shaping Education Equity and Teacher Diversity

11. Shaping education equity: teacher diversity, expectations, and student outcomes.

According to the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), “Education Equity is achieved when we eliminate the predictability of student outcomes based on race, gender, zip code, ability, socioeconomic status, or languages spoken at home.”

ACTION: As you engage with the readings and media, continue to reflect on your own thoughts and feelings regarding these important issues. Consider the following questions:

Reflect on Gershenson, Holt, and Papageorge’s study and its finding that teachers’ expectations likely shape student outcomes.

  1. Does your school district have a process in place to ensure that teachers are maintaining high expectations for all students? If not, what steps need to be taken to foster such an environment?

A growing body of research indicates that educator diversity can contribute to positive outcomes for all students.

  1. In the 2018-2019 academic year, 82% of Virginia’s teachers were white. Choose a school in your district and analyze the teacher/student demographics. How might the current diversity (or lack thereof) affect the learning environment and outcomes?

The VDOE has found that Black students who are exposed to just one Black teacher by third grade are 13% more likely to enroll in college.

  1. Reflect on your district’s commitment to diversifying the educator workforce. What recruitment and retention practices are in place to promote this diversity, and how effective do you think they are?

Examine how your school district allocates resources to advance equity and inclusion.

  1. Are human and financial resources being used effectively to address disparities? What additional steps might be needed to ensure that all students, regardless of their background, have access to an equitable education?

As you conclude this module, take a moment to reflect on how teacher diversity and expectations shape student outcomes. Understanding these factors is key to driving change within your school district. Consider how the gap between student demographics and the teacher workforce affects educational equity, and think about the ways recruitment, support, and resource allocation play a role. The next step is to focus on the actions you can take to help create an environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive.
